Better By a Third?

Kraft claims its new PHILADELPHIA 1/3 Less Fat Soft Cream Cheese tastes every bit as good Regular Philly. But we’ve heard that kind of thing before, haven’t we? Not just from Kraft but for products in nearly every category from potato chips to ice cream to beer. And many have failed to live up to the marketers’ promises. So we’ve all become skeptical of such claims.

In Kraft’s own online survey, conducted in January of this year, 94% of Americans said they think reduced fat versions “never, rarely, or only sometimes” measure up to their full-fat counterparts.

But here is Kraft, boldly going where so many have gone before, telling us that this new reduced fat cream cheese has “all the rich and creamy taste of Regular Philly because it’s made from the same farm fresh milk and cream.” They even back their promise with a guarantee of a free tub, if you don’t think it’s just as good (see their website for details).

Cream Cheese at 35,000 Feet

During February, the brand treated some 500,000 passengers on selected JetBlue Airways flights to free breakfasts, as part of the new product’s P.R. and marketing campaign. (Don’t know whether that helped make those long delays on airport tarmacs anymore tollerable, but I’m guessing it helped some.) They obviously are putting a major effort behind this new product.

Putting It to the Test

We taste-tested the Garden Vegetable, Chive & Onion, and Strawberry. (They also offer a Plain.) First of all, we found the soft and creamy texture of the product to be ideal for spreading on bagels, English muffins, or crackers—even ones that are rather fragile. We slathered it on Pretzel Crisps, which, incidentally, have become a real snack favorite in the kitchens of The Food Channel.

So, does this lower-fat, fewer-calories version REALLY taste as good as Original Philly?

As a matter of fact, it does. We found the flavor totally delivered…couldn’t tell the difference between the reduced fat product from Regular Philly. It was unanimous. This is a terrific product.

If you’re a cream cheese lover looking to trim some fat and calories from your diet, we’d recommend you give PHILADELPHIA 1/3 Less Fat Soft Cream Cheese a try.

Now if they could only find a way to shorten the product’s name…
