Making Apple Dumplings

Making scrumptious-from-scratch apple dumplings isn’t so hard, thanks to this Step-by-Step Recipe Photo Tour.

Core the apples carefully starting from the bottom to within 3/4 inch of the top. Take care to leave stems intact.
Remove the apple peel.
Mix together sugar, cinnamon, raisins and walnuts in a small bowl.
Fill the apple centers with some of the sugar-cinnamon mixture and dot with butter.
Press the mixture firmly into the apple cavity.
Roll pastry dough to a thickness of no more than 1/8 inch. Cut into 8 squares, then cut each square into a triangle. Place apple in center of the triangle.
Bring the edges of the pastry together, moisten with water and press to seal.
Cut leaf shapes from the dough scraps; use the back side of the knife blade to make leaf veins.
Garnish dumpling with leaves as desired by pasting them on with water.
Lightly brush each dumpling with egg glaze.
Place the dumplings on parchment-lined baking sheet and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, until the pastry is puffed and lightly brown.
Now that’s a beautiful thing.
