Every year about this time we hear about this time we start hearing stories about outrageous foods—usually fried—being served at state fairs across the country.
Deep fried Oreos, deep-fried Twinkies, even deep-fried Coca-Cola have been among the gourmet delights that have capture the fancy of fair goers.
This year the culinary creation getting most of the headlines is one that gets right down to basics: Deep Fried Butter. Yes, it’s pretty much a stick of butter on a stick…that’s been deep fried.
The yummy sticky treat has been a big hit at this summer’s Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. There’s more than 400 calories and 45 grams of fat just in the two ounces of butter—before it goes into the fat fryer. Then it gets coated in a cinnamon-honey glaze.
None other than Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin, in an email to supporters, wrote that she was “excited to try some of that famous fried butter on a stick.”

Fair vendor Larry Fyfe, who created the deep-fried butter on a stick said: “Whenever you say ‘butter on a stick,’ people think of a stick of butter and it running down their face and everything, and it just doesn’t sound too good.”
But he explained that once the stick is fried, most of the butter has melted.
Oh, well, then. Sounds good now. Right?
