The next in our continuing series of Junk Foodie.
We’ve all had them—those fried pies that fast food consider a staple of their dessert menu. Right? And it seems like over the years, whether it’s a credit to more sophisticated palates or a simply companies economizing, the filling has gotten less substantial, the crust a bit harder, and the pie itself even smaller.
And now, you know that feeling when you bite into something and it exceeds your expectations?
Yeah, that’s what happened with Popeye’s latest addition, the Blueberry Lemon Cream Cheese Pie. Let’s break it down.
First, it’s an unexpected move toward sophistication in fast food. Blueberry Lemon Cream Cheese is a little more upscale, a little more nuanced, a little more refined in its flavor profile.
Second, they actually filled the shell, so that every bite had a mix of blueberry and cream cheese—you don’t end up with a piece of hard shell at the end.
Third, it’s still fast food. That means easy to grab, not expensive to add to a meal, and delivering just a measure of escapism to your day—assuming you need that after you’ve indulged in the fried chicken that came as the prelude to dessert.
Finally, it means our call out of hand pies (see our 2014 Dessert Trends) was on track. We called them out because they met all the trending criteria of portability, versatility and variety—not to mention all the kitchen gadgets that make them easy to replicate at home.
Don’t bother, though—because as long as you have a Popeye’s, you can drive through and never have to make your own.
Popeye’s provided NO consideration for this story and probably don’t even know that we exist. We just liked it.
