This exotically scented, lightly flavored rice is a delicious accompaniment to saucy vegetable, chicken, and pork dishes.
Why Try? This rice will give you ‘something different’ to serve instead of a typical rice or potato side dish. All the ingredients can be kept in the pantry, so you can make the rice whenever the mood strikes.

Don’t let the spices dissuade you – this is a delicately-flavored dish that should please the pickiest tastes. Remove the paprika from the dish to eliminate the spicy-heat. A pinch of saffron may be substituted for the turmeric for added elegance.


  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • pinch ground cloves
  • pinch ground cardamom
  • pinch ground cinnamon
  • pinch paprika
  • 2 teaspoons salt


  • 1 Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed, 2 to 3 quart saucepan over medium-high heat. When oil begins to shimmer, add remaining ingredients and stir to coat for 10 seconds.
  • 2 Add 2 3/4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to low. Simmer until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed, approximately 18 minutes.
