Hot Tips for a Winning Race Day Menu

Posted by Bill Bailey from The Food Channel

The Kentucky Derby is only partly about a horse race. Derby Saturday is about pomp and tradition, southern belles in fancy hats and gentlemen in seersucker suits. It’s “My Old Kentucky Home” played over the loudspeakers at venerable Churchill Downs. It’s a television sports event with more than two hours of coverage for a two-minute horse race.

Ah, but what a thrilling two minutes it is! The world’s finest thoroughbreds bolting out of the gate, gaining speed at the far turn, making a sudden surge down the homestretch. It can be truly breathtaking.

The Run for the Roses offers a wonderful opportunity to invite friends over…to watch the race, sip cocktails, nibble on snacks, and perhaps place a friendly wager. While we can’t offer any tips on the horses, we’d like to present our Derby Day menu recommendation, which we believe is pretty close to a sure thing.

We’ll get into the traditional spirit of things with our recipe for a Derby Mint Julep. It’s top shelf.

Our Rosemary Spiced Pecans make for a unique and tasty race day nibble. Another great race day snack: our Gruyère Cheese Straws and flaky, they practically melt in your mouth.

And you’ll love our Honey Mustard Ham and Cheddar Biscuits. Quite possibly the best ham & cheese sandwich you’ll ever enjoy.

Odds are, your Derby Day gathering will be a winner. We’d bet on it.
