Like the rough ends of timber on the cookie jar itself, these pinwheels have a clearly defined pattern that pulls you into a maple and sorghum dreamland. The smell alone will have you coming back for more.

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract
  • 1 tablespoon sorghum syrup
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • A pinch of salt


  • 1 Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • 2 Beat together butter, powdered sugar and vanilla.
  • 3 Add eggs; mix to blend. Add flour; mix to blend.
  • 4 Divide dough in half.
  • 5 Add maple extract to one half. Add sorghum syrup to the other half.
  • 6 Using a rolling pin on a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece of dough into an oval.
  • 7 Place a brown oval and a plain oval on top of one another.
  • 8 Starting at one side of the oval, roll dough together so it forms a long pinwheel.
  • 9 Using a knife dipped in flour, cut dough into slices, forming circles.
  • 10 Place on greased cookie sheet.
  • 11 Bake about 10 minutes.
