Bargain Shopping Alive and Well

More interesting trends are emerging in the grocery business in these times of economic uncertainty. Grocery Outlet, a west coast chain in six states offering a 40-60% discount on name brand foods, is thriving under the current economy. You don’t know exactly what they will have but the selection is diverse enough to make it a one stop shop.

It actually started as a way to sell military surplus at deep discounts in the 40s, and now has 124 stores that pass on big discounts from the bargains they buy. The company web site explains, “We search the world for unique and exciting BARGAINS on everything from orchids to wine, from imported cheese to furniture, so every trip to Grocery Outlet is like a treasure hunt.” Don’t go there expecting to get everything on your list, in other words, but be prepared for a good deal.
