Crystal Light has introduced three new varieties to its line of low-calorie drink mixes, which now totals 28 flavors. The new flavors are the latest additions to the increasingly crowded nutrient-fortified beverage category.
We sampled Crystal Light’s new trio of mixes in The Food Channel test kitchens.
The three new varieties are part of the brand’s On The Go line—small mix packets designed to be added to a standard 16.9-ounce bottled water for convenient on-the-go flavor and nutrient enhancement. Using the brand’s own marketing language, these convenient little packets are meant to ‘Take your water from pale to pumped.’
The new flavors
- Focus Citrus Splash is enhanced with caffeine for mental energy and also contains a good source of zinc and Vitamin C.
- Metabolism+ Peach Mango Green Tea contains a blend of natural green tea antioxidants and caffeine for a short-term boost in metabolism. It’s also a good source of Vitamins C and E.
- Red Tea Mandarin is another newcomer to the brand’s enhanced tea portfolio, which includes a variety of green teas and white teas. The Red Tea Mandarin is fortified with antioxidant Vitamins A (beta-carotene), C and E, and has 55mg of natural rooibos polyphenols. It’s the first herbal tea mix from Crystal Light and is naturally caffeine-free.
The products retail for $3.29 for a 10-count package.
The taste test
Although all three had a hint of “artificial sweetener” flavor, the taste was generally pretty good. The Peach Mango Green Tea had a genuine fruity peach flavor, not overly sweet like some peach teas can be. The Citrus Splash was another favorite of our panel. It has just a lightly sweet lemony-lime taste—very refreshing. The Red Tea Mandarin was unanimously chosen as the third place finisher among the three new flavors, while the panel was split between the Peach-Mango and Citrus Splash as the panel’s top choice.
If you’re one of those who wants to drink a lot of water each day, but finds plain water “boring,” Crystal Light on-the-go packets are certainly a convenient, low-calorie way to “pump up the flavor” and get some extra nutrients while you’re at it.
