You’ve heard of eating with your eyes—foods so yummy-looking you can taste them before you take a bite. And your mom probably told you to eat your carrots because they’re good for your eyesight.

But did you know there’s an impressive cadre of chefs working to create dishes for better eye health?

EyeCare America has teamed up with celebrity chefs from across the country to provide recipes that include foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Celebrity Chefs participating in the campaign include: Devin Alexander, Janette Barber, Domenica Catelli, Jim Coleman, Khai Duong, Mr. Food, Jeff Fournier, Mary Beth Lawton Johnson, David Lawrence, Maria Liberati, Kate McAloon, Jeff Moschetti, Rebecca Newell, Jyl Steinback and Jeff Tsao.

The program, called ‘Feast Your Eyes on This,’ has a focus on fighting Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) which affects approximately 10 million Americans. Although there is no cure for AMD, recent studies show that eating foods rich in antioxidants such as lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc, may reduce the risk of AMD, or slow its progression in some people.

Some of the eye-healthy dishes created by the chefs include Luscious Grapefruit Meringue by Chef Janette Barber, Pesto-Stuffed Beef by Chef Jim Coleman, and Sweet Potato and Carrot Soup by Chef Kate McAloon. You can download these and many more recipes at this eyecareAmerica website.

There appears to be no end in sight to the functional food trend. And that’s a good thing, certainly in this particular case.
