D.I.Y. Energy Bars

By Cari Martens

Ever wanted to design your own energy bar or candy bar? Built with the ingredients and sweetness level of YOUR choosing?

Two design-it-yourself companies now let you call the shots like a 21st Century Willy Wonka.

With YouBar, you’ll be a more nutrition-conscious Wonka clone. YouBar lets you build your own nutrition bar on its Build-a-Bar Website. You choose the base (with choices such as Almond Butter, Organic Dates, or Cashew Butter), the nuts and seeds, the dried fruits and berries, the sweeteners and sweetness level, the grains, cereals, and extras like chocolate chips and coffee crystals. You can have vitamin and fiber infusions, too, if you wish.

You even get to name your bar creation, which gets emblazoned on the wrapper of each bar! And YouBar has a ‘guaranteed delicious’ policy. They arrive only about a week after you order them. The company also offers offers customized shakes, trail mix, cookies and cereal.

If you prefer a more choco-centric bar, you should check out the custom-tailored chocolate bars available from Chocri. The German company lets choose a base of white, dark or milk chocolate, and select from 12 varieties of dried fruit, 17 nuts, plus some spice choices. You can also add extras such as smarties, gummie bears, and caramel balls.

Until this year, Chocri’s service was only available to residents of Germany. Now we can order them from the U.S., too, at their website CreateMyChocolate.com.

Hmmm. Designing my own chocolate bar… sounds dangerous. And delicious.
