Former Cold Stone Creamery chief executive Doug Ducey has won Arizona’s Republican primary for State Treasurer.
Ducey bested former state lawmakers, Barbara Leff and Thayer Verschoor, in his election bid.
The race for the treasurer’s post is Ducey’s first foray into state politics but many Arizona political insiders think this could lay the groundwork for a subsequent run for higher office.
Ducey, who touted his business experience in the race, says ‘I am also thankful to Republican leaders like Dean Martin who welcomed me as a newcomer to politics in this race. It is exciting to be part of a terrific Republican ticket led by Governor Brewer. It’s on to round two and the general election.’
Before selling Cold Stone Creamery in 2007, Ducey built the franchise up to 1440 stores, in all 50 states and ten countries around the world.
Across the country in Florida, another former president and chief executive didn’t fare so well. Craig Miller, formerly of Ruth’s Chris Steak House, lost his bid in the Republican primary race for the U.S. House of Representatives.
