Unilever, parent company of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and many other brands, unveiled a new smile-activated vending machine in Cannes, France, last week that rewards free ice cream to those with the widest grins.
As reported by website Market Watch, the new machine was introduced to some of the top creative leaders in the advertising field, gathered from around the world for the annual Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
Branded ‘Share Happy,’ the machine has an ‘attractor screen’ that uses augmented reality to draw passers-by. The person is then prompted to smile and the smile-o-meter measures the grin. The facial recognition technology also gauges the person’s age, gender and mood. Those who say Cheese with a wide-enough smile receive a free ice cream, which they can choose from the touch-screen menu. A photo is also taken and uploaded to Facebook with the person’s permission.
The Share Happy vending machines will be introduced in high-traffic global consumer locations, such as shopping malls, during the next 1-2 years. So you have some time to practice your toothiest smile.
