You might need to bring your photo I.D. next time you visit Burger King or Sonic. You may just get carded.
Two South Florida Sonic Drive-Ins will soon be serving beer and wine, in an effort to boost sales and profits. The Sonic in Miami, opening this summer, will offer 25 kinds of bottled beer and 10 varieties of wine. But the booze will only be served to customers who eat on the patio, not to those in cares. The Ft. Lauderdale Sonic will only sell beer and wine inside.
Burger King has been offering beer and wine for a while now in the chain’s kiosk-style “Whopper Bars” located near college campuses in Las Vegas, New York, Miami, Orlando and Kansas City.
As we reported last year, Starbucks has been selling beer and wine in a few of its Seattle stores.
The move to add alcoholic beverages to the menu is one way fast food restaurants can try to win back customers they may be losing to casual dine eateries like Applebee’s, Chili’s and TGI Friday’s.
Whether this trend will spread to other quick-service restaurants, such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Arby’s, remains to be seen. Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr. might be a fit, though. If so, you heard it here first.
A Thickburger and frosty-cold beer…yeah, we can see that as the newest combo meal.
