Have you had the opportunity to meet Frank the Fruitcake? He’s part fruit, part cake, and a new social media creation from those funny folks at Walmart—he’s an animated talking holiday fruitcake.
Voiced by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, Frank appears in a series of YouTube videos the gigantic big box chain hopes will go viral. He can also be uploaded to your Facebook page to give you a running commentary on life as Frank sees it. To activate, users can upload Frank to their walls via Frankthefruitcake.com and unwrap him from his packaging. Then you can send Frank to friends (and enemies?).
Hey, it’s better than getting a real fruitcake for Christmas, right?
The Frank character is portrayed as an annoying, underappreciated yuletide staple, about as welcome as an opinionated relative who shows up at Christmastime and doesn’t know when to leave. When you try to send Frank away, he starts singing and won’t stop.
The Walmart name barely shows up in Frank’s videos, and he isn’t connected to any of the retailer’s other campaigns. The social media character seems to exist mostly for fun and a way for Walmart to reach out to a younger, hipper, tech-savvy consumer.
Here’s one of Frank’s “trailers.”
