Music plays a welcome part of the dining experience at many a nice restaurant. But wouldn’t it be cool if when you pick up a meal to go, you could also take a bit of the music with you?
That’s the idea behind Soundwich, a new restaurant that just opened in the Portuguese city of Porto.
Soundwich offers diners a choice of seven different sandwiches, each created by a talented local chef, accompanied by a tune personally selected by the chef to enhance the sandwich-eating experience.
The sandwiches are packaged in a metal lunch kit that plays the music when opened—similar, we assume, to the way this is done with greeting cards.
Customers who order up Chef Helio Loureiro’s curried pork sandwich with walnuts, apple and raisins will enjoy the old Casablanca song “As Time Goes By” as they nosh. Those who select the ratatouille with goat cheese sandwich created by Chef Camilo Jaña will be entertained by a bit of Latin jazz.
The soundwiches are priced at EUR 7.5. (about $9.50 USD).
Whether or not this multisensory dining experience makes it to American shores remains to be seen. But it sounds like it could be a hit over here, as long as it’s yummy to eat and has a good beat.
