
For an easy way to give your traditional recipe for Sheet Cake an unexpected twist, substitute Black Walnuts. They will add a more robust and out-of-the-ordinary flavor. The rich, earthy flavor is derived from the roots of the tree.

Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 sticks margarine
- 4 tablespoons cocoa
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 eggs
- ICING FOR SHEET CAKE: 1 stick margarine
- 6 tablespoons buttermilk
- 1 cup Black Walnuts
- 4 tablespoons cocoa
- 1 pound box powdered sugar
Preparation
- 1 Sift dry ingredients into bowl.
- 2 Melt margarine and mix with cocoa and water.
- 3 Bring to a rapid boil and pour over dry ingredients.
- 4 Add buttermilk and eggs.
- 5 Bake in cookie sheet pan with edge at 350ºF for 15 to 20 minutes.
- 6 ICING FOR SHEET CAKE: Melt margarine, cocoa and buttermilk.
- 7 Bring to a boil and add powdered sugar and black walnuts.
- 8 Spread while cake is hot.
