Pies, Pies, Everywhere Are Pies

There’s a pretty good tradition of pie-making in my family. But are they blue ribbon pies? They are to our family, just as yours are to your family!

I’ve been thinking a lot about pies lately. How can I help it when we have so many delicious ones staring me in the face from the pages of The Food Channel?

There’s actually a pretty good tradition of pie-making in my family. My mother makes the best – hands down, best – pecan pie I’ve ever had. And no matter what I try, from scratch pudding to store-bought, I can’t get my chocolate cream pie to turn out like hers. Good thing she’s always willing to make it for the family events, and I just resort to lemon.

My mother-in-law was also a master, particularly at apple pie. I think the secret was in the way she thinly sliced the apples, using the edge of a box grater . . . that and the fact that butter figured heavily into the equation!
