Joey Chestnut successfully defended his crown as hot dog eating king in the annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, held as usual on New York’s Coney Island.
By the time the competition was over, Chestnut had devoured a record-breaking 68 dogs. Former champion Takeru Kobiyashi was able to eat ‘only’ 64 in the 10-minute contest. The two champions stood side-by-side, going bite-for-bite as the crowd cheered for their favorites. There were several other players, but the two champs stood bun and frank above the rest.
It was Chestnut’s third straight victory in the world’s most famous competitive eating event. Prior to Chestnut’s streak, Kobiyashi had won a record six consecutive titles.
Chestnut hails from San Jose, Calif. Kobiyashi is from Japan.
