CKE Restaurants, parent company for Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr., has done it again. Another TV spot that straddles/crosses over the line of good taste.
Let’s review. We’ve seen a skimpily attired Paris Hilton washing her car while eating a Thickburger…Padma Lakshmi sitting on the stoop, hiking up her skirt while enjoying a Western Bacon Thickburger… and a guy who’s smirking about being a ‘cheater’ on his girlfriend (while eating burger, of course)…
And now we have a new TV spot in which real people are asked in a blind taste test to choose between A) Donut Holes, and B) Hardee’s new Biscuit Holes. In short, the folks are asked if they prefer the ‘A’ holes or the ‘B’ holes. Comedy ensues as there are lots of humorous (unintentional?) comments about the ‘A’ holes.
It’s pretty funny, really, though we’re guessing some folks will be offended. But then, we’re also guessing that the people who’d be offended are probably not part of Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr’s (younger, male-skewed) target audience.
Hardee’s even has a “Name Our Holes” contest going on at the company’s website, if you’d care to get in on that action.
Seems like the burger chains that are fighting to see who’s number two behind McDonald’s will do whatever it takes to get some attention (see Burger King’s continuing ‘Creepy King’ series). And we’ve got to give a shout out to Jack in the Box, whose TV spots rarely fail to amuse, though they’re not quite as edgy.
Frankly, we’re rather enjoying the show, and eager to see what’s next.
Here’s the commercial. See what you think.
