What Should We Serve at a Wedding Reception?

I am helping my future daughter-in-law plan her wedding, which she is having at an historical home in Raleigh, NC. Most of the reception will be outside and they are planning heavy appetizers. Since she is from Georgia, we are thinking about having a signature peach drink (alcoholic) along with beer, wine and mixed drinks. What would suggest we serve? We thought about serving some foods to pass during the time the wedding party is taking pictures and then having the heavy appetizers buffet. How many different things should we have and how should we balance it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Without knowing your budget, I can’t provide specific answers – your wedding planner and/or caterer will help you find a solution that meets your specific needs.

However, you can do a little homework before developing the menu with your planner/caterer. You can’t go wrong with menu items that feature local ingredients that are in season, so investigate what produce might be peaking in the Raleigh area in late-April/early-May (or just ask the cater). In addition, if you are seeking to include menu items influenced by Southern foods, you’ll find inspiration in these cookbooks by chefs who have helped define and modernize Southern cuisine:

If you need help or inspiration for that signature peach drink, here are a few we recommend:

Golden Peach Margaritas

White Sangria

Warm Peach Wine

One final tip – relax and enjoy the celebration!
