Each year we look at the list of original recipes created in The Kitchens of The Food Channel and think back to the flavors we sampled throughout the year. Then we ask our chefs and editorial staff to name their favorites. It’s a great time of remembering the smells, the shoots and the tantalizingly great tastes that are a routine part of our jobs. Yes, we know we are luckyâ€”but you, too, can make these recipes in your own kitchen and share them with your co-workers and friends!
Our list is compiled from staff votes, using the following criteria:
1) must have been a Food Channel original;
2) recipe most commented on or requested;
3) should have been tasted and enjoyed by staff;
4) preference given to recipes that stand alone rather than sauces or icings;
5) a balance among food categories.
So, if you missed them the first time, here is our list of our top ten favorite recipes of 2009. Enjoy!
1. Lobster Mac and Cheese
This one made everyone’s list.; in fact, one chef added the note “aka: heaven.” It was the kind of dish that made us sneak bites right out of the pan (yes, while it was still on the stove). It’s that good.
2. Tuscan Brick Chicken
Here’s another one that made everyone’s list. It not only sounds like fun, it tastes amazing. We had fun with this outdoor patio shoot, and have since experimented with different bricks and different cuts—and still agree this one is a top flavor choice.
3. Tic Tac Toe Ice Cream & Cookie Treat
This one is pure fun (our editor even uses it for an avatar on an internal program). It represents some of the great trends of 2009 – shareable, mini, frozen dessert, and interactive. If you haven’t played with your food lately, start with the X in the middle!
4. Fontina Scalloped Potatoes
These are pure melt-in-your-mouth goodness and a great way to dress up a potato dish. The Fontina cheese, the spices, and the unique way of slicing them makes this a dish fit for any celebratory meal. Or, come to think of it, dinner tonight!
5. Everything Breakfast Pizza OR the Applewood Smoked Bacon and Egg Breakfast Pizza
At The Food Channel, we like our pizza for breakfast. That became apparent when we had a shoot out between these two morning treats. So, we included them both so you can choose. We know part of the draw is bacon, which is included on both of these pizzas, so you can take it from here!
6. Oyster Stuffing
One of the marks of a great recipe is how craveable it is. This stuffing is one of those that we couldn’t stop eating. In fact, when we gathered up the leftovers from our holiday shoot, there wasn’t enough of this left to even box up. So, of course, we gathered around and each had another spoonful! Put this one on your list for next year if you didn’t try it in 2009.
7. Guinness Beer Battered Onion Rings
It’s not just the fun photo that drew us back to this. It’s definitely the high flavor quotient. These are the perfect party food. We can’t wait to throw another one!
8. Raspberry Rhubarb Tart
We know what you are thinking. Rhubarb? Yes, rhubarb. You really have to try this dessert to get the full flavor combination: ripe rhubarb, fresh raspberries, fragrant orange zest, and crystallized ginger. We kept finding fault with the finished product just so our chefs would make more!
9. Grilled Rosemary Pork Tenderloin
This cut of meat gets the respect it deserves with the combination of olive oil, rosemary, thyme, garlic, lemon juice and Dijon mustard. We made this during the summer but surely it’s summer somewhere!
10. Green Tea Lemonade
No list is complete without a beverage, and this one was our lip-smackin’ favorite. It’s a real thirst-quencher with the flavor of lemonade and the healthy benefits of green tea.
We made hundreds of recipes during the past year, so you can’t expect us to stop at ten favorites—actually, we like them all, or we wouldn’t have added them to the pages of The Food Channel. Here are a few more that deserve special mention.
