Okay, so you thought it was over, but the cupcake craze is taking a new spin on the standard sweet goodness. Enter Lasagna Cupcakes!
The spirit of CultureWaves trend, Sensory Appeal, says “When you add a new sensation, it all seems new.” The cupcake trend has taken on a new feel: savory and individual from meatloaf to lasagna.
Marshall Heyman with the Wall Street Journal online reports that Trader Joe’s in New York is selling frozen turkey meatloaf muffins, topped with spinach and mashed potatoes, which, by all accounts, are particularly good. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, the entertainment industry’s latest obsession is lasagna cupcakes.
Lasagna cupcakes are the creation of Matt Poley, a partner in catering company Heirloom-LA, and were conceived out of necessity for a kids party. It started with individual mac and cheese, but with a little ingenuity the little lasagna cupcake was born!
“The truth is,” Mr. Poley went on, “it’s kind of hard to dog on a lasagna cupcake. As long as they aren’t scalding hot, you can eat them with your hands. In fact, we encourage it. You might get some spillage, but not a lot.”
Heirloom sold about 10,000 of the cupcakes in December and at this point has 15 employees dedicated to making them at a rate of about 200-300 a day! So, a little bit of goodness goes a long way…and can be shipped frozen across the country. My curiosity is piqued, so I may have to fork out the $42 bucks for a sample box!
