The Resurgence of Retro Candy

If the thought of penny candy from the olden days, such as candy buttons (remember those long strips of paper with colorful little buttons of candy stuck to them?) gives you a feeling of nostalgia, it will be welcome news to you that many of these retro sweets are enjoying a comeback.

Classic candies of the past, such as Ice Cubes, Nik-L-Lips, and Moon Pies, which were big sellers from the 1930s to the 70s, had been difficult to find in recent times. But lately, they’re beginning to show up again. Though most of the time they’re going to cost you more than a penny.

One chain of candy shops that sells them is Powell’s Sweet Shoppe, as reported in a story by Michelle Macaluso for Fox News. Powell’s has candy stores along the west coast. Store manager Scott Smith says customers come in to buy candy and reminisce about the long ago days of their youth.

Other candy stores enjoying brisk sales of nostalgic candy brands include Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York City, Candyality in Chicago, and Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shops in Southern California.

A customer at Powell’s, quoted in the Fox News story, touched on the feelings of nostalgia the old-fashioned candies can evoke. “Coming into the store is like deja vu. It brings back memories, good memories, since candies are always fun,” said Terri Everett.

Powell’s employee Erica Heinisch says the retro candies are often of a higher caliber as well. “There’s just a better quality for the old fashioned candy, she said. “(Customers) are just really excited that they’ve found something they haven’t seen in 20 years and they are so elated that they we actually have it.”
