What do zombies eat?

If you love the fantasy surrounding zombies, you know the answer (or check Wikipedia). If you don’t know anything about the undead, we’ll try not to spoil your own appetite. Let’s just say that it’s brain food.

We found Zombie Burger and Drink Lab in Des Moines, Iowa after asking a local resident for the best place to eat in town. The name alone was enough to intrigue our crew, given the cultural craze around zombies. And you never know when you may face a zombie attack.

If it’s simply an attack of the munchies, though, we recommend the Fried Brussels Sprouts or the Goat Cheese and Jalapeño Poppers, served with Raspberry Chipotle Sauce.  If you want  salad, check out the selection of Soylent Greens. Follow it up with your choice of burger, like the Dead Moines with smoked gouda, prosciutto, ham, and truffle mayo.

If you are truly adventurous, go for The Walking Ched, described as “breaded and deep fried macaroni and cheese bun, bacon, Cheddar cheese, caramelized and raw onion, macaroni and cheese, mayo.” If that doesn’t kill you, you may already be a zombie.

Calories and cholesterol aside, they offer you a choice of patty for all burgers: beef, chicken, or Portobello mushroom. The meat has great flavor and is cooked with those nice crispy edges, just right to satisfy any late night cravings. Add the Loaded Fry Basket for your table and chow down.

For a little Brain Freeze, we recommend one of the shakes (which they’ll divide for a crowd), like the Zombie Bride Wedding Cake shake. You may not want to know what’s in it. They also offer spiked shakes and a selection of cocktails and mixed drinks. A Gangrene Martini, anyone? This may be the best place to try a little Crystal Head Vodka, too, with its skull-shaped canister.

Be sure to walk around the restaurant and check out the movie posters, artwork, figurines and local artwork. There are a few surprises, and if you want to bring on a nightmare, just peek behind the bar and see the zombie clown.

There is a full bar, and the downtown Des Moines restaurant offers a mix of tables that makes it a great place where friends can go to have a little fun. Word has it that, while this is the only Zombie Burger and Drink Lab, there are rumors of a growth strategy. So be on the alert for a Zombie Burger attack. You just never know where they may turn up.

They say that if you encounter a zombie you can send it back to where it came from by feeding it salt.

Halloween is coming. Keep your shaker handy.
