Sloppy Joeโ€™s are a regular menu item for anyone with teenagers…at least, they should be.

ย

When my kids were in college we regularly hosted a couple dozen of their friends on Sunday nights, when the school cafeteria was closed and their money didnโ€™t stretch too far. Iโ€™d fill several crockpots, lay out fresh bakery buns, open a few bags of chips, add some crunchy celery and carrots as a side dish, and theyโ€™d help themselves from there.

The recipe I used was one Iโ€™d gotten from a Mennonite friend in Pennsylvania. She knew how to cook, and how to make food stretch. I still think of her every time I make this recipe. Itโ€™s easy to double (or triple…or more) to feed your own crowd of hungry teens of any age!

CHEF’S NOTE: You don’t want to use beef that is too lean, as the fat adds flavor. If you use leaner meat, you may want to add 1 T. olive oil as you cook the meat.

Ingredients

  • buns
  • hamburger meat (recommend 85% lean ground beef)
  • finely diced onions
  • ketchup
  • yellow mustard
  • cider vinegar
  • brown sugar
  • Worchestershire Sauce
  • salt & pepper to taste

Steps

Start by slicing buns open, and toasting them lightly if desired.

Cook hamburger meat with onions until browned through.

Add additional ingredients in a mound and stir through the hamburger until heated thoroughly.

Serve by scooping meat onto prepared bun. Add cheese, or sides as needed and enjoy!
