¡Cinco de Mayo!

By

Cinco de Mayo (May 5th, in English) is observed in the USA and the rest of the world as a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture. The irony is that while many Americans are partying with Mexican food, drink and music, the day goes by virtually unnoticed in most of Mexico.

Many people believe Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day. It isn’t. Mexicans celebrate their independence day on September 16. Cinco de Mayo commemorates a victory of Mexican forces over French troops in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. But the French were not defeated and expelled until five years later.

That said, it’s still a great time to salute our friends from south of the border with wonderful Mexican food and beverages while listening to a little Mariachi music. So crank up Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass and dig into our special Cinco de Mayo spread of recipes.
