Cancer Survivors Create Special Packaging Art for New Tea Flavors

In recognition of October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Celestial Seasonings tea has introduced two new antioxidant-rich green teas—Cranberry Pomegranate Green Tea and Tropical Grapefruit Green Tea—with box artwork created by breast cancer survivors Heidi Kummli and Dagmar Fehlau.

The two new green tea varieties support Celestial Seasonings’ sponsorship of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

‘The healthy ingredients and nurturing goodness of Celestial Seasonings teas make us a natural partner for the National Breast Cancer Foundation,’ said David Ziegert, Acting General Manager of Celestial Seasonings. ‘We hope our new teas will support the efforts of this great organization, and also continue to increase awareness of this important cause.’

Rich in antioxidants

The two distinctive new green tea flavors are rich in health-supporting antioxidants. Cranberry Pomegranate Green Tea is infused with sweet pomegranates and tart cranberries. Tropical Grapefruit Green Tea features the brisk aroma and refreshing taste of fresh grapefruit. Both are 100% natural with no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. The teas are available at grocery and natural foods stores nationwide for the suggested retail price of $2.99 for one 20-count box.

Celestial Seasonings has a rich history of creating thought-provoking tea boxes whose beautiful artwork tells the story of the goodness found inside the box. With the help of the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center of Denver, Celestial Seasonings was able to identify a talented group of local artists who were also breast cancer survivors. From that group, Dagmar Fehlau and Heidi Kummli were selected to develop purpose-driven tea box art for the two new green tea varieties.

Distinctive packaging art

Fehlau and Kummli’s unique artistic perspectives allowed them to use the healthy ingredients in each tea to illustrate their stories of courage, perseverance and hope. Fehlau created a colorful gouache-style painting for Cranberry Pomegranate Green Tea. Gouache technique uses an opaque water-based paint to achieve an effect that combines characteristics of both oil and watercolor styles. Kummli tapped her expertise in beadwork to develop for Tropical Grapefruit Green Tea a beaded tapestry that is unlike anything ever featured on a Celestial Seasonings package.

‘We are known for the imaginative, carefully crafted art that has always adorned our tea boxes,’ Ziegert said, ‘and having these inspirational women create the art for these exclusive teas in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation is especially meaningful.’

The National Breast Cancer Foundation focuses on extending and improving women’s lives through educational programs that stress early detection and good breast healthcare. There is reason to be optimistic about NBCF’s efforts. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer has increased from 80% in the 1950s to 98% today. Increased awareness of the need for early detection plays a crucial part – NBCF estimates show that 70% of all breast cancer cases are first detected during breast self-exams. Celestial Seasonings is proud to make a generous financial contribution in support of NBCF’s continuing efforts to save and enrich the lives of thousands of women across the country.
