Homemade croutons can turn a plain green salad or an ordinary bowl of soup into something a little special.
Plus, homemade croutons are much better than the store-bought kind, and so simple to make. The flavor is fresher, and the texture is so much better—a nice crunch, yes, but you can actually stab these savory croutons with your fork without them breaking apart into crumbs.
First, here are the ingredients you’ll need.
- 1/2 loaf of Italian or French bread
- 1/2 stick of butter
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 garlic clove

Slice the loaf of bread and cut slices into crouton-sized cubes.
Smash the garlic clove by smacking the side of the knife with the heel of your hand.
In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil with the garlic clove until it starts to sizzle.
In a large bowl, pour oil mixture over bread cubes, and toss.
Return mixture to the skillet and heat over medium heat, turning as the croutons start to brown. Cook until evenly toasted.
Serve immediately, or save for later. So tasty, you’ll be snacking on them right away. Enjoy!
