KFC Plans Grilled Chicken Choices

Louisville, Ky.-based chicken chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has announced that it is currently testing grilled chicken items in select locations, with plans to launch them nationally in early 2009.

Kentucky Grilled Chicken is marinated and seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices before being grilled. Each piece of grilled chicken has between 60 and 180 calories and 3 to 9 grams of fat, as compared with KFC Original Recipe chicken with 130 to 360 calories and 8 to 24 grams of fat. The prices of the new grilled menu items will be on par with their fried counterparts.

“The great tasting product will help KFC continue to evolve and increase our relevance among consumers looking for non-fried menu options,” said Gregg Dedrick, president of KFC.

The new grilled menu items come along with updated packaging and new marketing plans for the chicken chain. KFC locations currently testing the grilled chicken are serving the item in buckets that are half red and half white, unlike any of KFC’s previous incarnations of its iconic bucket. This version includes “Kentucky Grilled Chicken” graphics on the white side and “Kentucky Fried Chicken” graphics on the red side.

KFC will promote its grilled chicken with three new television commercials. In one of the spots, one of the chain’s storefronts is replaced with a sign reading, “Kentucky Fried (& Grilled) Chicken.”
