Turning Green for Halloween

This Halloween, many parents are worried about the safety of candy due to it being imported (after China’s recent contamination scare) in addition to the potential health effects from artificial ingredients. Parents are looking for alternatives such as natural and organic candy—and for other ways to be kind to the planet. This is why companies such as Glee Gum and ChicoBag are saying, ‘Forget orange and black. Why not have a GREEN Halloween?’

Glee Gum has teamed up with Green Halloween to promote a more environmentally-friendly holiday this year.

Glee Chewing Gum is the only gum made in the U.S. that contains chicle, the original ingredient from which all chewing gum was once made. The chicle sap is sustainably tapped from Sapodilla trees in the rainforests of Central America, much like maple syrup is here in the States. Though every other gum now uses completely synthetic ingredients in its gum base, Glee Gum prides itself on being all-natural and old-fashioned. It’s made without artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, or preservatives.

Using chicle is a sustainable way to keep the trees of the rainforest standing, and to enable people who work there to make a decent living. Certified vegetarian by the American Vegetarian Association, and packaged in recycled cardboard, Glee offers a greener alternative to artificial gums. It’s sold nationwide at specialty grocers and chains such as Whole Foods, Cost Plus, and Trader Joe’s.

The Green Halloween® Scene

Green Halloween is a non-profit, grassroots organization striving to create healthier, eco-friendlier holidays–beginning with Halloween. Now in its second year, the movement is all about educating and inspiring communities by showing how easy, affordable, and fun it can be to factor our earth and our health into our daily choices. In a show of support, Glee Gum is donating over ten thousand samples for Green Halloween® events in six different cities: Seattle, Phoenix, Daytona Beach, Los Angeles, Canton, Conn., and the Bay Area, Calif.

Green Halloween® booths will be cropping up at lots of local festivals and eco-friendly stores to chat with interested parents and hand out tasty treats to tots. To learn more about the movement and find fun events near you, you may visit www.GreenHalloween.org. Green Halloween® is a program of Treeswing, a non-profit based in Seattle which aims to improve kids’ health and prevent childhood obesity.
