You Are What You Eat

By Cari Martens

Are you as American as apple pie? Well, a New York Times article reports that pollsters are tracking your voting habits by your eating habits.

According to the story, “If there’s butter and white wine in your refrigerator and Fig Newtons in the cookie jar, you’re likely to vote for Hillary Clinton. Prefer olive oil, Bear Naked granola and a latte to go? You probably like Barack Obama, too.” And if you plan to vote for John McCain, it’s a good guess that pizza delivery is in your future.

It’s just another way of looking at consumer behavior, called microtargeting, but we think it’s also kind of fun to think about. If that person next to you is drinking Dr. Pepper, is he really a Republican? If she swears by Sprite, does that make her a Democrat? According to the pollsters, if you subscribe to cooking magazines, you are more likely to be a Democrat. So far, no word on what an addiction to food websites might say!

It makes a certain amount of sense – If I know what you like to eat, I can surmise some of your other habits. And if I know your habits and hang outs, I can eventually judge your political affiliations.
