Eight O'Clock Coffee "Socializes" with Mad Men

By Cari Martens

Eight O’Clock Coffee may be a 150-year-old brand, but it’s right up to date when it comes to social media, as it’s proving with its sponsorship of three new social media apps from AMC’s Mad Men.

AMC is attempting to generate buzz for its third season of the Emmy Award-winning series, which premieres August 16. The cable channel has just launched ‘Mad Men Yourself’ on its own microsite (madmenyourself.com), which allows the show’s fans to create their own 60’s-style avatars in the mold of their favorite Mad Men characters.

As reported by Karlene Lukovitz for Marketing Daily, Eight O’Clock will have brand presence via banner ads on Mad Men Yourself and two other new apps scheduled to debut on August 10. ‘Which Mad Man Are You?’ is a trivia quiz game, and ‘Mad Men eCards’ feature the show’s characters and messages meant to generate Internet chatter about the show. All three apps can be used through Facebook, Twitter, iPhone and AIM.

Mad Men and Eight O’Clock make a good match, says Denise McVey, President of S3, Eight O’Clock’s ad agency. She says it’s because the brand is a brewed-at-home coffee that was popular in the 60’s, the decade when Mad Men is set—and there are frequent scenes of the characters consuming the caffeinated brew in the kitchen.

Eight O’Clock’s Twitter page currently has about 2,600 followers. The brand has been reaching out to some of the followers, complimenting them on their avatars and reminding them that the Mad Men Yourself app is ‘fueled by Eight O’Clock Coffee.’

Eight O’Clock is the country’s top-selling whole bean brand, with sales in excess of $38 million in the U.S. last year.
