40 Days Sans Meat: Hold the Chicken, Please

What are you giving up for Lent? Christen Nehmer, videographer for The Food Channel, is giving us her experience in going meatless. Follow along throughout the 40 days of Lent.

It’s salad. Again.

Day Three:

I started today off with the normal bowl of oatmeal, sans banana, and my latté. The hunger pangs for lunch kick in at about 11:30 a.m. What will I eat today? I absolutely love the McDonald’s Southwest Salad, so that’s what I’ll eat.

I’m in the drive thru ordering my delicious salad. The guy asks me if I want crispy or grilled chicken. I do love their grilled chicken, but no, can’t eat that. I said, “No chicken, please.”

He responded, ‘Grilled?’ and politely I said, ‘I would like the salad without chicken.’

Next thing I hear him say is the total; at this point I’m thinking, there’s going to be chicken on my salad, I know it.

I open up the salad and sure enough, lying there perfectly on the bed of lettuce is a beautiful piece of grilled chicken.

I hesitate. No one is around. I find myself staring at the breast meat.

I quickly scoop up the chicken, place it back in the bag and discard it into my trashcan. I hate wasting food, but I have such a guilty conscious.

I peeked around the corner at my trashcan. It’s done. It’s over. I’m moving on.
