About FoodWire™
FoodWire offers a monthly update on what’s cooking on Hungry for a snack? Lots of people apparently are. The number of restaurant menu items that contain the descriptors “snack,” “snackable,” or “snacker” have increased by an amazing 170 percent in the last 3 years—and there are plenty of snack products being sold from supermarket shelves too. The Food Channel’s list of the Top Ten Trends driving this snack mania in 2010 includes selections such as “Chip and Dip 2.0,” which finds snackers dipping into hummus with chips made from pretzels or falafel. We see a “Drink Shift” happening, with people making their own smoothies at home using fruit juices and mixes from Jamba Juice. And lots of folks are “Goin’ Nuts,” eating two handfuls of almonds, pecans, or walnuts a day instead of one—because studies show it’s better for us. Believe it or not, fresh fruits (“The Low-Hanging Snack”) are the number one snack among kids aged 2 to 17, but we’ve moved beyond apples and oranges to things such as açaí berries and organic chocolate-covered banana bits. Well, that’s a sneak preview of what’s included in our Top Ten. Check them all out—one through ten—to see if you’re “on-trend.” You might also want to visit our Build-a-Burger Workshop feature, with recipes that show you how to make your own “Sliders” at home. Sliders are part of Snack Trend #2: Small and Sensational.
