Share Our Strength®, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to eradicating child hunger in the U.S., announces the launch of its 8th annual Great American Bake Sale®. The program, sponsored by Domino® Sugar, C&H® Sugar and Duncan Hines®, is one of several the nonprofit offers throughout the year to engage consumers and food professionals in raising awareness of, and funds to eliminate, childhood hunger. Television Food Network celebrity chef Sandra Lee is the Great American Bake Sale’s national spokesperson.
Ms. Lee is hosting a kick-off event, the World’s Largest Bake Sale, on March 29 in Grand Central Terminal in New York. She will be joined by Mario Batali, Emeril Lagasse, Duff Goldman, Lidia Bastianich and Rosanna Scotto. Lee has also created a semi-homemade bake sale board of directors, comprised of women representing cities across the country. Board members will host bake sales in their cities on March 29 in concert with the New York event. Lee is also launching her new Semi-Homemade Bake Sale cookbook this month as well, with 50 percent of proceeds going back to fight child hunger. In addition, bakers nationwide are banding together for a National Challenge Weekend, May 14-15, to see which individual or group can raise the most money over that weekend.
Any individual or group can hold a bake sale to raise money for Share Our Strength throughout the year. Simply visit www.greatamericanbakesale.org for tips on getting started, recipes from Sandra Lee and corporate sponsors, examples of past bake sale successes, and, for a $10 donation, a starter kit and your own fundraising page to track progress. For readers who are food professionals, the connection between your business and eliminating child hunger is a natural. Bake sales are a great way to rally customers, employees and peers for a cause relevant to all.
While the kickoff and challenge events cover a specific timeframe, bake sales can be hosted by any individual or group at any time during the year. Funds from sales and other initiatives benefit Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign, which seeks to end childhood hunger in American by 2015. Through this campaign, the organization ensures that children in need are enrolled in federal nutrition programs like school lunch and breakfast; invests in community organizations that help connect kids with the food the need; teaches at-risk families how to cook healthy, affordable meals; and build public-private partnerships to end child hunger. Since 2003, 1.7 million people have participated in the Great American Bake Sale, raising more than $6 million.
“Hunger affects more than 17 million kids in the United States,” Lee says. “That’s nearly one in four. Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale is a great way for people to give back to their communities while having fun. By hosting bake sales, individuals and groups are helping feed children who struggle with hunger.”
Lee (www.sandralee.com), the popular star of Food Network’s (www.foodnetwork.com) Semi-Homemade Cooking (www.semihomemade.com) and a premier lifestyle and food expert, faced hunger as a child. She, along with four younger siblings relied on federal feeding programs, like food stamps. In 2008, Lee joined the Great American Bake Sale as national spokesperson.
