A new study shows that having a little dessert at breakfast time can actually help you stick to your diet, shed pounds and keep them off for longer.
For eight months, scientists tracked 200 non-diabetic obese adults who were randomly assigned one of two low-calorie diets.
Both diets had the same daily calorie targets: 1,600 for men and 1,400 for women. The difference was one diet included a large breakfast with a sweet such as a doughnut, while the other one called for a larger meal later in the day.
Researchers from Tel Aviv University, who conducted the study, said the participants who consumed the carb- and protein-rich 600-calorie breakfast were more successful at sticking to their diets than those who ate the lower-calorie (300) breakfast.
The research team found that halfway through the eight-month study, participants in both groups lost an average of 33 pounds. But in the last four months, the small-breakfast group regained an average of 22 pounds while those who ate the treat with their morning meal went on to lose another 15 pounds per person.
“The goal of a weight loss diet should be not only weight reduction but also reduction of hunger and cravings, thus helping prevent weight regain,” said Dr. Daniel Jakubowicz, the study’s lead author.
The study participants who ate the dessert with breakfast diet reported feeling less hunger and fewer cravings compared with the other group, and were better able to stick to their daily calorie goals.
Blood tests also revealed levels of ghrelin, the so-called ‘hunger hormone,’ dropped by 45 per cent in the dessert group compared to 30 per cent in the other group.
Dr. Jakubowicz said the diet’s high protein content reduced hunger. He said the combination with carbohydrates left the participant feeling full, while the dessert kept sweet and fat cravings under control.
This sounds like good news to me. Maybe I WILL have that cheese Danish tomorrow morning after all.
