Debate Question: Would You Ask It to Get Free Pizza for Life?

People attending Tuesday night’s debate between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney will undoubtedly be asking questions about the economy, jobs and foreign policy.

But will one “lucky” voter ask one of the candidates about pizza topping preferences? If so, that shameless person will get a lifetime of free pizza from Pizza Hut.

That’s right, the nation’s number one pizza chain has come forward with an offer of free Pizza Hut pizza for life to anyone at the town hall debate at Hofstra University brazen enough to ask whether Mr. Obama or Mr. Romney prefers sausage or pepperoni. (To be precise, the prize offer is one pizza a week for the next 30 years.)

“We recognize there are a lot of serious issues to be debated, but we also know a lot less serious — but no less important — ones are being discussed every night inside houses across the country,” Kurt Kane, chief marketing officer, of Pizza Hut, said in a statement. “So for the candidates to be able to show that they’re in tune with all the issues, we felt a pizza-related question on behalf of the Pizza Party was very appropriate for a town hall debate.”

There will be no moderator at this week’s debate. Questions will come from undecided voters chosen by the Gallup Organization.  We wonder if the Gallup people will somehow try to prevent the pizza topping question from being asked. Will they demand that voters sign some kind of Grover Norquist-type of pledge not to ask any pizza-related questions?

Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert had a funny take on the Pizza Hut challenge.

What if you were one of these undecided voters attending the debate?  Would you sully the proceedings with this silly query? Hey, remember when someone asked Bill Clinton about his underwear preferences a couple of election cycles ago? And that young person didn’t get a single slice of pizza for being so audacious.

Well, Pizza Hut’s stunt certainly adds an extra element of suspense…one more reason to tune in, I guess. I know I’ll be watching.
